Posing with props on a photo shoot or film set can really help models, especially those who are new to the business.
Having something to focus on will help you concentrate and look much more natural as you follow instructions and perform for the lens.
Props on a modelling set could be anything from a book, magazine, handbag or umbrella to something as large as a pushchair, bicycle or even a car!
If you are offered and accept an assignment through Models Direct, our friendly agent will tell you everything you need to know about the job.
This will include whether the client has requested you to arrive dressed in a certain way and with any props of your own.
A child model, for example, might be asked to bring one or two of their own toys to play with, while a mature model might be encouraged to make sure they have a pair of glasses or handbag with them.
The agent will also tell you as much as they know about what will be happening on set – including whether you are likely to be working with any props that will be supplied.
Before any assignment, we always encourage our models to warm up a little at home.
We suggest they practise a few poses in front of the mirror and start getting to used to holding props as they do so.
Try a few poses as you cut the bread for your lunchtime sandwich, for example, and stop and think about how you are brushing your teeth or reading your book.
Initially, you are likely to feel a little self-conscious while doing this, but you will soon get used to it!
If our agent has been able to tell you exactly which props you will be using on the day, then do try to locate something similar to practise with.
You will find yourself so much more at ease on the day if you are used to handling that particular prop.
When you arrive at the location of the assignment, the director, photographer or another crew member will take time to explain to you what will happen.
They will tell you where you need to be – and when – and will discuss wardrobe, makeup and props with you at that point.
When you collect your props, check they look right and are working properly.
If you find there is any kind of problem at all, then discuss this as soon as possible with a member of the crew.
Props are vital in many photo and film shoots as they enhance the reality of the situation.
And having the right objects to hold or work with will also help you to do the very best you can to ensure the assignment is a success for you too.
