It’s no secret at all that making it in the world of modelling is no easy task.
Along with having the exact look a client is seeking, and the ability to deliver what is required, success in modelling always comes with a huge helping of pure good luck.
But, if you have the will, the patience and the dogged determination to give it your all, then you should certainly try your hardest.
Here are Models Direct’s top tips for success in modelling:
1 Start small
Whether you have hopes of ending up as a full-time fashion model, a catwalk superstar or simply someone who just tips their toe into the world of modelling from time to time, you should always begin by taking baby steps and managing your expectations. No one launches a successful modelling career overnight – so don’t give up your day job – and be prepared to try it out for a while to see whether this is something you will really enjoy.
2 Think carefully
Take time to consider whether you as an individual are suited to modelling. It is not simply a case of stepping out in front of a camera and smiling. Modelling can involve lots of background hard work, such as keeping your e-portfolio up to date. You may have to travel, spend time away from home and work long hours. You need to be someone who is friendly, easy-going, reliable and a good team player. You must be able to listen to instructions and act upon them. If you believe you have these abilities or can hone them, then you are ready to take the first steps towards modelling success.
3 Join a genuine agency
All successful models start out by working with an authentic, trustworthy agency. Do your research, read reviews and find out more about the kinds of assignments you may be offered if you join a particular agency. Of course, we are biased, but we believe Models Direct is the perfect place to start. We are government regulated and accredited and we have been placing models in paid, part-time work for almost 35 years now. We have many models who receive as much work as they wish through us. Anyone seeking to forge a successful, full-time career from modelling would also be well advised to join an agency such as ours, as they build a portfolio and gain experience.

To be a successful model you have to work hard yourself and not rely on your agency. Ensure your e-portfolio and modelling photographs are regularly updated. Look out for modelling opportunities yourself through social media and other sources. If you see an opportunity, tell your agency about it. They will check it out for you to ensure it is genuine and safe and they will negotiate a fair fee on your behalf and ensure you are paid promptly. Network with other models, photographers and individuals working in the industry. They may also have tips and advice for you.
5 Ride the ups and downs
Modelling is a competitive business – at Models Direct we make no secret of that. You have to work hard to do your part and we will work hard to do ours. But there are never any guarantees. When you are shortlisted for an assignment and then not selected, it is extremely disappointing. But you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and remember that it is not personal, it is simply that the client felt another model was better suited to this particular job. Equally, however, when things are going well, do not rest on your laurels. You still need to keep your e-portfolio up to date, respond quickly to your agency and work hard when on an assignment. You also need to keep networking and looking out for the next modelling opportunity. When things are slow, have patience and keep yourself busy by doing what you can to give yourself the best possible chance of being chosen for a booking.
